The New Age Is Begun: the Fords of Isen Army List

Good morning gamers,

We're back for another week in Rohan month (Volume III!) with the Fords of Isen army list. A while back, the TMAT team did a podcast episode where we drafted Legendary Legions and I got the first pick of the first round. My choice was easy: Theodred's Guard. I took them to a low-points event that Centaur threw and came in third with them (tying one of my best performances at an event) and I know I wasn't alone in the international community for thinking they were good. Still, this list may have been a controversial choice for some, but I think most players would agree that it was playable if not very good - and then when the new edition arrived and you couldn't run it anymore, I eagerly awaited the arrival of the Armies of Middle-Earth book and the resurgence of a proper mixed-arms Rohan list (one that didn't require the War of the Rohirrim heroes, most of whom I still have to buy). With the release of both the Armies of Middle-Earth and the Legacies documents, we have a pretty good army list that has only gotten better with a recent errata. Let's see what's cooking for one of Rohan's finest lists!

The Fords of Isen: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list has more profiles available to it than the Fields of Celebrant list - but only if you allow Legacy profiles to play, which seems fair considering the Fields of Celebrant is a Legacy list. For named heroes, we have to take Theodred and we can/should take Elfhelm and we can also take Grimbold if Legacies are in play. For generic heroes we have Captains of Rohan and maybe King's Huntsmen. On the warrior front, we have Rohan Royal Guards, Riders of Rohan, Rohan Outriders if Legacies are in play, and Warriors of Rohan (who can technically be taken as one of two forms, Warriors of Rohan or Helmingas, if Grimbold is in your list - though only in his warband).

That's . . . not a lot of profiles, but as is usual for not having a lot of profiles, this list makes up for that with a lot of special rules - some of which are copied over from the Legendary Legion of last edition (which I always thought had an excellent set of special rules).

Army List Bonuses

For army creation rules, we have to take Theodred (I don't know why you wouldn't in any case) and we can take up to 50% throwing spears, thanks to an errata - we are definitely going to take advantage of that! There are two passive rules that are pretty good: when your army breaks, all of your models gain Dominant (2) (Resolute Rohirrim) and everyone (including Theodred) gets Sworn Protector (Theodred), so they'll pass Courage tests if Theodred is alive and on the battlefield (Protect the Prince). The first rule might require some record keeping in Reconnoitre (see a recent discussion on the latest FAQ for more on that), but otherwise we're able to effectively double our army on objectives once we've lost half of our army and we don't have to worry about break tests/Terror walls so long as Theodred is alive - perfect!

Additionally, there's a fail-safe rule for Theodred that's new to the list (The Courage of Elfhelm): if he is fighting within 6" of Elfhelm, enemies cannot target Theodred with Strikes if they can target someone other than him. This means that a) we want Theodred to fight dangerous things with a buddy or three, b) we want to take Elfhelm in every list (already done, but still), and c) we want Elfhelm to stay near-ish to Theodred.

There are two notes I'd like to make about special rules that are not in this list: first, this is another Rohan list where Riders of Rohan do count towards your bow limit. Second, this is also one of a few Rohan lists where you don't get Strength +1 on the Charge. Between these two rules being absent, you're actively being encouraged not to go too hard into cavalry and instead are encouraged to bring a mixed arms force (more on that in the profile discussion below).

The New Age Is Begun: The Fields of Celebrant Army List

Good morning gamers,

The month of September will tackle the last four army lists with Rohan models. We're kicking things off with a list that harkens back to when I first got started with Rohan: the Fields of Celebrant. Back in the last edition, you could run Eorl the Young with other named heroes if you were okay losing your army bonus . . . and I figured that the Might regen from Gamling's banner (which was far more reliable last edition) and the Arise, Riders of Theoden rule from having Theoden in your list made everything better (Eorl basically became a cheaper version of Eomer, slightly worse in some ways and slightly better in other ways). This edition, you don't need these boosts nearly as much - so let's see if the requirement to work with Minas Tirith (which was an option last edition but wasn't required) changes anything about how the list operates.

The Fields of Celebrant: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list doesn't give us a lot of profiles, but most of our bases are covered. We have to take Eorl the Young and a Gondor King of Men (and we're limited to taking a single King of Men in this list). The list also has Captains of Rohan/Minas Tirith for generic hero support and a basic warrior unit (Riders of Rohan and Warriors of Minas Tirith) and a more specialized warrior unit (Sons of Eorl and Citadel Guard). I think there are models that would be good to add to this list, but I think what we have is perfectly functional.

Army List Bonuses

This list has the two expected rules restrictions for list building: Rohan Warriors can only be taken by Rohan Heroes and Gondor Warriors can only be taken by Gondor Heroes. I gotta say, while I fully accept these list building restrictions, it sure makes me appreciate the more open list building options you have in lists like Men of the West and Defenders of Helm's Deep, where you can mix-and-match your warbands to make each a bit more balanced and self-sufficient. This list, like a lot of other lists, has a clear build: some infantry blocks in certain warbands and a threatening cavalry charge in others.

To assist with these list building restrictions, there are three special rules that affect the models in the list. With the Gondor's Last Defence rule, Gondor models that are within range of an Objective Marker get to reroll 1s when making Strikes, which is . . . not nothing, but certainly not as good as what you see in Atop the Walls where it also affects shooting attacks. The Rohan models bring a once-per-game rule (The Charge of Eorl) that requires friendly Cavalry models (your Rohan models that are still mounted and the King of Men if he took a horse) to Charge if they choose to move and can Charge AND they get to reroll all failed To Wound rolls when making Strikes. This operates just like the Ride Out army list rule and Theodred's rule but NOT like Beorn's Berserk rule: if the unit can Charge and chooses to move, it has to Charge - but it doesn't have to Charge if it chooses not to move.

The New Age Is Begun: the Defenders of the Pelennor Army List

Good morning gamers,

This month is "Pelennor month" and we've covered the Fiefdoms (lots of Gondor units with special take-this-hero-to-get-these-warriors rules), the Grief of Eomer (a mix of Gondor and Rohan units, led by two smashy heroes), and the Return of the King (all of the ghosts with the Three Hunters thrown in). Today, we're taking all of those units - plus a bunch of others who show up in the Atop the Walls list - and putting them into one monster list! In trade for this greatly expanded roster, we're going to have a single special rule . . . but don't let that knowledge cramp your style. The list is very strong and gives veteran players a lot of options for list building. Let's see what we have to work with today!

The Defenders of the Pelennor: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

There are a ton of profiles in this list - the full list is provided in the profile adjustment section below. Suffice it to say that if you're looking for someone from Minas Tirith, the Fiefdoms, Rohan, or the Rangers who was fighting in the War of the Ring, chances are good that you'll find them in this list.

Army List Bonuses

This list has some army building restrictions - none of which are unique to this list. Your Rohan Warriors have to be led by Rohan Heroes, your Gondor Warriors need to be led by Gondor Heroes, and your Dunharrow Warriors have to be led by a Dunharrow Hero or one of the Three Hunters. The omission in this list is that the Rangers don't have the ability to lead anyone - they're included because of their appearance in the Return of the King book, where they led Clansmen of Lamedon (and other Fiefdoms militia from the coast), so it seems to me that they should be able to lead other units (maybe if there are no Dunharrow units in your list to be book-accurate?).

Beyond this, there's only one rule: each Hero in your army gets to declare a free Heroic Combat once per game. This is a really great rule since a) it's free, so Grima can't make it cost extra Might, b) it affects all heroes regardless of their affiliations, and c) it's easy to keep track of for both you and your opponent. On its face, this is weaker than the Riders of Theoden army list (where you get a once-per-game Heroic Combat on a single turn if Theoden is still alive, but also get +1 Strength on the Charge) and probably weaker than the Return of the King (where you get Anduril for free and F4 on some of your Warriors), but overall, it helps this list a lot in that you can take the list in any direction and you won't be fighting against the army list bonus.

The New Age Is Begun: the Return of the King Army List

Good morning gamers,

One of the most popular Legendary Legions last edition was one of the first Legendary Legions that was released: the Return of the King. This list is really easy to collect - just get the Three Hunters, the King of the Dead with Heralds, and a box of the Warriors of the Dead and you're pretty much golden (especially if you use one of the Heralds as a banner-carrying Warrior of the Dead). When all is said and done, that's not a lot to spend (by wargaming standards) and you have a perfectly functional, durable army. Today, we're looking to see if that inexpensive army is actually worth taking - and if so, how you do it. Let's dive in and see what's cooking in the Vale of Erech!

The Return of the King: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list requires us to take both Aragorn and the King of the Dead - these are two heroes that we'd probably want to take anyway (and if you don't want to take the King of the Dead, consider the list that we're looking at next week instead). In addition to these two, we have Legolas, Gimli, and Heralds of the Dead as our heroes (Heralds being the only generic hero option) and we have Warriors of the Dead and Riders of the Dead for our warrior choices.

I think this list lost a real opportunity by not including other options - namely Dunedain/Rangers of the North as heroes in any list and Angbor the Fearless as a required choice (instead of the King of the Dead) and Clansmen of Lamedon if you don't take the Dead. The addition of the Lamedon contingent allows you to do the Book-accurate part of Aragorn and his men arriving at the Pelennor (the Dead help them get the black ships from the Corsairs, but don't actually come to the Pelennor). I guess if you want to play with that list . . . come back next week. :)

Army List Bonuses

There are two army list bonuses that center around Aragorn and one for the King of the Dead. Aragorn gets Anduril for free (a 40pt value) and this helps him keep up with the absurdly low wounding difficulties of the Dead. Additionally, friendly Dunharrow Warriors will get +1 Fight Value while within 3" of him, which means some of your warriors (but not many at all) will be F4 . . . that's something that you used to have to get with spearmen before and now you're getting it for free - yaye!

The King of the Dead picks up a niche rule that allows him to spend a Will point when he Charges to force each enemy model within 3" of him to pass a Courage test or move as far as possible directly away from the King of the Dead. This is what Instill Fear used to do last edition - and if you're not keeping the King of the Dead from being shut down by magic, this gives you a good use for his 6 Will points.

So It Begins, Part 2: The Walls of Helm's Deep

Good morning gamers,

We're back for another scenario in our custom Helm's Deep campaign. Today, the Uruk-Hai have made it to the walls and they'll be battling through the defenders, trying to get a hold of the walls. Can Aragorn and his friends kill 35 Uruk-Hai in 12 rounds? Can we keep Aragorn alive? We'll see - here are our participants . . .

The Walls of Helm's Deep (War in Rohan, p. 26)

We're using the actual scenario participants in this scenario:

  • Forces of Good: Mostly The Defenders of Helm's Deep
    • Aragorn - Strider with armor
    • Legolas Greenleaf with armor
    • Gimli, Son of Gloin
    • Haldir with Elf bow and heavy armor
    • Aldor
    • Haleth, Son of Hama
    • 4 Warriors of Rohan with shields
    • 4 Warriors of Rohan with shields and throwing spears
    • 4 Warriors of Rohan with bows
    • 4 Galadhrim Warriors
    • 4 Galadhrim Warriors with shields and spears
    • 4 Galadhrim Warriors with Elf bows
  • Forces of Evil: The Assault Upon Helm's Deep
    • 4 Uruk-Hai Captains
    • 10 Uruk-Hai Warriors with shields
    • 10 Uruk-Hai Warriors with pikes
    • 12 Uruk-Hai Berserkers

The record keeping for this scenario is tricky - we tried our best to keep a faithful tally. You will see how this went shortly . . .

The New Age Is Begun: the Fiefdoms Army List

Good morning gamers,

We're kicking off Pelennor Fields month with a list that I'm very glad I waited to review until after the FAQ dropped: the Fiefdoms. At the start of the last edition, I was completely blown away by the "overlapping bubble" rules that the army list had (the Fearless and Banner buffs in particular) and the units themselves were pretty average cost for above-average Fight (for the most part) and low-to-average Defense (for the most part). At the end of the last edition, I was building lists around Imrahil and Gandalf the White, using Minas Tirith frontliners supported by Dol Amroth pikemen. This edition, the Fiefdoms plays pretty differently with some very, VERY drastic changes to reign them in (and yet no commensurate price drop appears to be present for their units) - I'm a pretty generous person and I try to write that way on this blog, but I gotta say, this army seems a little over-priced on a few units and so . . . prepare for not a lot of variety in the lists at the end. :) Let's see what lies beyond the realm of Minas Tirith as we travel south and west through Gondor to find the oft-unsung heroes of the Pelennor fields. As we do in this series, anything that's strictly tied to Legacy profiles will be in red.

The Fiefdoms: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

There aren't any new profiles for this Gondorian subfaction - though Imrahil got a fancy new sculpt! We have the OG named heroes of Imrahil, Forlong, Angbor, and Duinhir alongside Captains of Dol Amroth for our generic heroes. We also have Knights of Dol Amroth (foot or mounted), Men-at-Arms of Dol Amroth if you're using Legacies, Clansmen of Lamedon, Axemen of Lossarnach, and Blackroot Vale Archers. While we have all of these guys on the roster, your actual roster may vary a little . . .

Army List Bonuses

The army list in this edition is . . . a little weird, but thematically better than last edition. While you used to be able to take all of the warrior types in the list, regardless of which heroes came with them, now you have to have at least one hero of each subfaction (Dol Amroth, Lamedon, Lossarnach, and the Blackroot Vale) in order to bring warriors of the same type. This makes sense to me - though as was noted in our custom list at the end of the last edition, the Clansmen of Lamedon that show up at Minas Tirith are led by an unknown Captain, not Angbor . . . so maybe there should have been an exception for Clansmen of Lamedon?

The profiles are, however, exactly what you expect: Prince Imrahil and Captains of Dol Amroth (who can give you access to Knights/Men-at-Arms of Dol Amroth if you want someone cheap), Angbor the Fearless (who gives you access to Clansmen of Lamedon), Forlong the Fat (who gives you access to Axemen of Lossarnach), and Duinhir (who gives you access to Blackroot Vale Archers). This functionally means that you might be forced into two or three of the factions if you want an all-around list (cavalry/expensive front-line infantry - and/or supporting models - from Dol Amroth, bows/supporting models from Blackroot Vale, front-line guys from either Lamedon or Lossarnach).

The New Age Is Begun: The Army of Thror Army List

Good morning gamers,

We occasionally get requests for army lists to review - and at the start of last month, we got a request for the Army of Thror (which was originally slotted for coverage in July, but was pushed to make space for last week's article on Moria). Well, we're answering the mail again and we're tackling the Army of Thror - which is a list that comes under a LOT of scrutiny by the competitive community, but I think this is a very solid list if you run it a particular way.

The Army of Thror: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list has the five named Dwarf heroes from last edition (Thror, Thrain, Young Thorin/Balin/Dwalin), as well as three generic heroes (Dwarf Kings - new to the list, Erebor Dwarf Captains, and Grim Hammer Captains), all of whom have Heroic March. The warrior contingent is exactly what they had before: Erebor Dwarf Warriors and Grim Hammer Warriors (with an upgrade for Guardians of the King for any taken in Thror's warband). All in all . . . they gained Dwarf Kings and otherwise, it's the same old profiles we know (and maybe love).

Army List Bonuses

This list started with the least impressive array of special rules in the game: Thror is treated as a 6" banner (which is good - but he doesn't count for VPs and you can't take any normal banners), everyone gets +1 To Wound an enemy model who is carrying an Objective Marker (which aren't always in the game), and everyone gets to reroll 1s To Wound when making Strikes while they're in their own deployment zone.

Now on the whole, these rules - if expanded a bit - would be really good: a 6" banner rule on a hero is always welcome, but it feels a bit bad when compared to the Ravenhill rule for Thorin or the Shire rule for Rosie, both of which give a 6" banner to a list that really needs it AND the target hero counts as a banner for VPs. Additionally, getting +1 To Wound is awesome, but it would be far better if it applied to enemy models who were near or carrying an objective marker (as you'd add a bunch of scenarios where it applies - and it would be more like the Gaffer's Flower Pots, which is a good rule). Finally, rerolling 1s while in your deployment zone is very similar to the Atop the Walls special rule that allows shooting attacks and melee attacks to reroll 1s while the unit is near an objective marker - and while rerolling 1s isn't usually seen as good, the value of rerolling a 1 gets better as your strength value goes up (and Atop the Walls has both kinds of Gondor siege weapons, so they're regularly wounding on 3s or 4s and rerolling 1s).

The New Age Is Begun: the Moria Army List

Good morning gamers,

We got a request a few weeks ago (at the time that I'm writing this) to review the Moria army list - and despite how crazy this world is, we listen here at TMAT and I found a slot for the article to fit in. So . . . tell us what you want us to review and we'll see what we can do. :) The Moria army list differs quite a lot from the Depths of Moria list, despite the fact that the core units of both armies are the same. Between rules that are present in each list and each having a different "big monster" (or monsters) in it, you can get a very different experience playing Moria than a "Depths" list. Let's see what causes these differences, shall we?

Moria: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list has all of the GW-named Goblins in it (both Durburz and Druzhag from the Armies of Middle-Earth and Ashrak and Groblog from the Legacies document), all of the generic Goblin heroes (both Moria Goblin Captains/Shamans and Blackshield Captains/Shamans), and all of the big monster heroes from the last edition EXCEPT the Balrog (Dragons, Cave Drakes, and the Watcher in the Water).

You also have access to most of the old Moria warrior profiles - Moria Goblin Warriors/Prowlers/Drum, Blackshield Warriors/Drum, Warg Marauders, Dwellers in the Dark, and Cave Trolls. These profiles are available to any hero in the list. Druzhag opens up a few other profiles: the big profile that was missing from the list above - Bat Swarms - as well as Fell Wargs and Mirkwood Hunting Spiders (who might actually be useful in this list - more on that below). All in all, unless you really liked Wild Wargs last edition, you have everything you had before - hooray!

The New Age Is Begun: the Army of Dunland Army List

Good morning gamers,

Editor's Note: this article does reflect the new gear options for Wild Men of Dunland, but the army lists do not - feel free to retool the lists if you want to.

We're back in the Legacy documents today with a review of the Army of Dunland (which is the last "wild man" list we need to cover this month - next week's article is a by-request article). This list features the way Dunland lists looked in the last edition, with heroes who were released in the War in Rohan supplement joining the ranks of the OG Dunland creations by GW a long, long time ago. This army list features a lot of profiles that are only available in the Legacy document, but there are a few familiar faces. Let's see how this list has changed from its Legendary Legion version last edition . . .

The Army of Dunland: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list has ALMOST all of the Dunland profiles in the game - it has the named heroes from the last edition (Thrydan, Gorulf, Frida, and the Oathmaker), Dunlending Chieftains as your generic hero option, and Wild Men, Dunlending Warriors, Dunlending Cavalry, and Crebain for your warriors.

The profile it's missing, however, is the generic Wild Man Chieftain - a profile that you'll find in the Army of the White Hand (and a mirror profile for Hill Tribesman Chieftains is available in the War of the Rohirrim lists that we viewed earlier this month) but that is absent here. In a way, it's weird that this option isn't available here . . . and in another way, it's good that it doesn't appear in this list, as it would probably ace the Dunlending Chieftain out of a job (more on that in the profile discussion below).

FAQ Time: Unpacking the July 2026 FAQ

Good morning gamers,

We usually have to wait until August for a balance update, but we got the update a month early (maybe because the new Dunland banner/war horn models wouldn't be legal without it?) - and I for one am not complaining. :-) There's a lot that saw change and I think most of them are pretty positive.

What Worked Like We Thought It Did

Due to the wide nature of players who play the game (from brand new to grizzled veterans), there's always going to be a few questions that you read in an FAQ and say, "yeah, that makes sense" or "yeah, that's how we've always played it." As is usually the case, there were a few of these for us here at TMAT - most of these are extensions of existing rules or previous FAQs, catching some minor nuances that may have been left as open doors:

Q: Can Beast models try to uncover Artefacts? A: No.

Q: If a Cavalry model had charged, fought and became Unengaged, and is subsequently Charged, does it maintain the Cavalry Charge Bonuses? A: Yes, so long as they still meet all of the conditions listed under Cavalry Charge on page 72.

Q: If a model forgoes its Activation as part of a Heroic Move, does it skip taking a Courage Test for being part of a Broken Army? A: No.

Q: If a Hero is involved in a Heroic Challenge against a Hero with the Survival Instinct special rule and causes a Wound that results in the Hero being removed as a casualty due to a failed Courage test as per the Survival Instinct special rule, does the Hero gain 1 Might Point for slaying their target? A: Yes, as the other Hero involved in the Heroic Challenge caused the Wound that forced the Hero with Survival Instincts to flee – a sure sign of victory!

Q: Can a Monster choose to make a Brutal Power Attack if there is no possibility of making Strikes? For example: if a Monster was prone and wins a Combat, normally they would not be allowed to make Strikes as they have stood up, but could they make a Brutal Power Attack? Or, if the Monster is Transfixed and wins a Combat? A: No. A Monster may only perform a Brutal Power Attack if they would be able to make Strikes.

Q: How many Heavy Objects can a Monster model or a model with the Burly special rule carry at one time? A: Only one at a time.

Q: If a single model is within range of multiple Objective Markers, can it control more than one at once? A: Yes.

Q: In Scenarios where Objective Markers can be carried, how do you measure from the Objective Marker for any special rules that come into play for being within X" of an Objective Marker, such as the Besiegers of the Hornburg Army’s The Promise of Wealth special rule? A: Measure from the base of the model carrying the Objective Marker instead of the Objective Marker.

Q: If Beorn the Bear uses the Barge Brutal Power Attack, does he have to charge if able to because of the Berserk special rule? A: Yes

Q: Can Boromir use the Protect the Little Ones! special rule if Frodo is wearing the One Ring and is the only friendly Hobbit model within 3"? A: Yes.

Q: Can a Spectre’s “A fell light is in them”, or the King of the Dead’s Visions of Terror, or a similar special rule be used to Move a model that is already engaged in combat? A: No.

Q: Does Brôrgir regain Will from his Sorcerous Adept special rule when using Heroic Channeling? A: No, a Hero that declares a Heroic Channeling will count the result of their next Casting Test that turn as a 6, not a Natural 6.

These are good clarifications and they follow the direct reading of the rules or formalize the way things have worked in past editions, so that's good. Now on to the new things . . .

The New Age Is Begun: The Besiegers of the Hornburg Army List

Good morning gamers,

In last week's article, we looked at the Usurpers of Edoras. Today, we're continuing "Dunland" month and looking at the Besiegers of the Hornburg. This list has a lot of familiar faces from the last list, but it's missing a lot of its previous identity. In trade . . . it gets one of the most interesting and fun profiles in the game! Let's see what this list has to offer (and whether it's any good).

The Besiegers of the Hornburg: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

We have fewer options, but surprisingly the same number of profiles in this list as we had in the Usurpers of Edoras last week. We still have Wulf, Target, Hill Tribes Chieftains, Hill Tribesmen, and Crebain, but we've lost Freca, Lord Thorne, and Rohirrim Traitors. In trade, we gain, Shank, Wrot, and their Snow Troll "pet". The list feels like it has a lot less going for it - the Rohirrim Traitors were the only means of getting a banner and war horn (also throwing weapons) into an Usurpers of Edoras list, so our Hill Tribesmen are going to be patently worse than before (oh, and there's no Freca to make them F4). Yep, our bench is thin, but hopefully we have some slick special rules to equal things out?

Stupidly Fun Lists, Part I

Good morning gamers,

Recently, we had a "longtime reader" send us the following comment:

I have 2 rather stupid but fun list ideas. This is already a suggestion for a category for you guys ;) "Just dumb fun lists" or so.
Anyway: List 1: All artillery gondor (3 Trebuchet,, 3 avenger bolt throwers, flesh out with whatever.
List 2: All fellbeast mounted nazgul, air superiority fighters. Welcome to the black dart missile age.
I always wanted to run this with allied dol guldur nazguls or castellans if somehow possible, but well.
Alternatively: Troll-only Barad dur squad. I still have to paint my trolls though

I began writing a reply when I decided that the "comments section" of an old post wasn't the right place to do it. This got me thinking as well about what lists would be "stupidly fun" to run - and maybe these thoughts will give you things to think about as well. With that, let's kick off a new series on "stupidly fun" lists to run - and how to make them viable (if not competitive). For the sake of starting somewhere, our lists today will all be 650pts - this should mean that you're probably 100-150pts off of whatever game you're playing, since many events are still run at the 500-800pt level.

The New Age Is Begun: The Rise of the Necromancer Army List

Good morning gamers,

Last time, we looked at the Pits of Dol Guldur army list, which has a pretty limited number of profiles. Today, we're tackling the Rise of the Necromancer army list, which basically took over the Dark Powers of Dol Guldur army roster and added some of the special rules/list building options from the Rise of the Necromancer Legendary Legion. As a fan of the Legion last edition, I viewed this as a direct upgrade - we can take normal troops if we want and we get almost all of the buffs to the Necromancer/others that we had before. Great move, GW, great move.

With a decent glow-up this edition, this list doesn't seem to be catching the eye of too many people, but it's certainly seeing play (at the time of writing this, TTA tells me that there are 288 recorded games with the Rise of the Necromancer army list and it sits at 141 wins, 137 losses, and 10 draws for a 49.0% win-rate - and there were 4 players at the 2026 Adepticon tournament that took it, which puts it at the higher end of the army-lists-used spectrum . . . though it's not as popular as Men of the West, Battle of Fornost, Reclamation of Osgiliath, or Grand Army of the South and as-popular as the Beornings, the Shadows of Angmar, and the Defenders of the Pelennor - good company those lists are). Let's see what all the fuss is on the other side of Dol Guldur, shall we?

The New Age Is Begun: The Pits of Dol Guldur Army List

Good morning gamers,

Ages ago, Centaur, Rythbyrt, and I did a podcast episode where we talked about the Fall of the Necromancer Legendary Legions and that built into a bigger discussion about all-hero lists (and hero-heavy lists) and what makes them good. The episode has aged a bit, but the general consensus we had at the time was that of the four Legendary Legions released in that supplement, the least interesting was the Pits of Dol Guldur.

After the toning down of the Vanquishers of the Necromancer Legendary Legion, the premiere Legion from that book became the Pits of Dol Guldur Legion. Championed by excellent players like Evan Iverson, a free-Heroic-Combat-each-turn from Azog, paired with a you-win-priority-and-no-enemies-can-call-Heroic-Moves rule that superceded rules like the Palantir of Saruman, made the list an incredibly hard-hitting, glass-cannon style list that some players who enjoyed their big smashy heroes paired with small-but-smashy infantry really liked. Today, we're looking at the heir of this Legendary Legion - the Pits of Dol Guldur army list - and seeing how the new version of the list compares to the old . . . and yes, it's both gained some things and lost some things. Let's see how it shapes up in the new edition, shall we?

The Pits of Dol Guldur: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list has all of the previous profiles and added a few more (really one more). Like last edition, you have Azog, the Keeper of the Dungeons, and Thrain the Broken as your named heroes and you have Gundabad Orc Captains and Hunter Orc Captains as your generic heroes. While you still have the three previous warrior profiles (Hunter Orcs, Gundabad Orcs, and Fell Wargs), you also have access to both Mirkwood Giant Spiders (good ones) and Mirkwood Hunting Spiders (bad ones), which gives you more strategic options for dealing with enemy heroes.

The list has a mix of cavalry models (Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs got broken out into their own profile now), fast infantry beasts, light infantry (who can be archers, but probably shouldn't be in this list), and heavy infantry. The list doesn't look like it has much in it, but you're covering a lot of bases with a limited number of profiles. Let's see what we've been given as army list special rules in order to incentivize taking this list over other Hobbit-era lists . . .

Back to Basics, Revisited: Monsters in MESBG

Good morning gamers,

Last time, we talked about how cavalry work in MESBG and today, we're turning to an element of MESBG that can absolutely alter the way a game can go: how monsters work. When I first got started in the game, things like "Brutal Power Attacks" weren't a thing - and neither was Heroic Strike (every hero had Move, Shoot, and Combat - and that was it). This meant two things with regard to monsters: first, a Monster was quite likely to have a higher Fight Value than anything he was fighting (or at least a tied Fight Value). Second, the go-to tactic for dealing with them was hoping one poor, unfortunate soul would be brave enough to tie them down for a turn - and if the dice were kind, he'd get a 6 while the monster wouldn't and he'd live to do it all over again on another turn. Or . . . you'd just shoot the guy/tie him down with an Immobilize to make him F1 with 1 Attack. My, those were odd times . . .

While the Hobbit rulebook modified this strategy some (early versions of Brutal Power Attacks were a thing), monsters - especially Warrior monsters - were in a bit of a spot because EVERY hero could call Heroic Strike and win the Fight Value mini-game. When the MESGB rules revamp arrived in late 2017, we got a rebalanced set of Brutal Power Attacks and Heroic Strike was constrained to certain heroes. Heroic Defense was added to others in that edition, which allowed for more diverse options for dealing with monsters.

In the current edition, Heroic Strike got toned down, Brutal Power Attacks changed slightly, and Dominant X was added to monsters. With no less than FOUR things you can do when you win a fight (and for some Hero monsters you can pick from a few more options), a lot of new players (to say nothing of us old vets who have various versions of the old rules sets in our heads) might forget some of the nuances of how these rules work. So what we're going to walk through today is not only how monsters work in MESBG, but how to use them well and how to fight against them if you see them across the table.

The New Age Is Begun: The Battle of Greenfields Army List

Hey Reader!

We're back with another shire-centric list!!! This is what I knew you DEFINITELY WANTED!!!

And after looking at orc lists recently, I'm not going to lie: it's so freeing to see cheap, horrible, waistcoated infantry again. Never fails to bring me joy.

Today we're looking at the Battle of Greenfields list: the niche part of Shire history where Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took led the hobbits of the Shire to a victory over Golfimbul and his orcs of the north.

Battle of Greenfields: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list didn't technically exist last edition; you could take Bullroarer as part of a Shire list, and if you did you couldn't take any other named heroes (so all of the hobbit heroes), but it was very common to team in people like Gandalf and Rangers, so there were options.

The New Age Is Begun: The Ravagers of the Shire Army List

Hey Reader!

Today we're discussing a shire-centric list!!! GET HYPED!!! It's the orcs led by Golfimbul to attack the Shire, but still: WE'RE BACK!!!

And after all my complaining about Buhrdur's Horde, good news for you: I'm actually positive on this list. I actually think I like it more, even though it lacks a power hero, but more on that below.

Ravagers of the Shire: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list is pretty different from what we had last edition, mostly because we're dealing with two faction tags: Golfimbul and the Hill Trolls have the Angmar keyword, while the captains, shamans, and orcs of various kinds have the Mordor keyword. So just know upfront that there's going to be some juggling of keywords (and it matters for a few rules).

Top 10 Hero Choices for the Realms of Men

All photos courtesy of GamesWorkshop

Hey Reader!

I've been playing around with the Realms of Men list recently (and took them to the TMAT GT this past May, where I finished with 2 Wins, 1 Loss, and 1 Draw), and as part of my experimenting with different iterations of the list, I decided to do a Top 10 post looking at the hero choices, because things are INTERESTING in this list.

There are quite a few heroes available to you (5 Kings, 6 Generic Captains, 2 specialists in the Knight of the White Tower and the Rohan King's Huntsman, and several siege captains), so all of them will make the cut! But how useful they are is another question. Before we start the review, let's look at what we'll be ranking in this assessment.
  • To start, you need to take a king to field their relevant captains and warriors, but we are not going to therefore say, "Ah yes: the king is automatically higher ranked because you need him to run the captains." We'll evaluate each individually for their usefulness in the list.
  • We will consider what kinds of warriors you get access to by taking a given hero, as unit options are part of why you'd consider taking a king/captain, and whether you should branch out into a second, third, or more factions because of what options will be unlocked.
  • We will assume that you are playing at a standard points range (600-800pts), so that there is no assumption of only having 1-2 kings: you can run as many as you want, which means that there are reasons to mix and match factions. So just because one faction may be stronger than another in terms of options, that doesn't automatically move them to the top (or bottom), though it may give a reason for pushing deep into one or the other.
  • Kings do have access to Heroic Strike; this will naturally lend them to being taken, and does make them inherently valuable. But Heroic Strike on its own does not necessitate "Top 5 Status."
So with no further ado, let's jump into the list!

The New Age Is Begun: The Buhrdur's Horde Army List

Hey Reader!

Today we're discussing a list that I got excited about when I heard Rise of Angmar was going to include it, and that I really, really want to love because it has one of my favorite heroes in the game in it, and he's the centerpiece of what they do. So before we start the semi-hate-fest that this post is going to be (because man this list is really constrained, and hard to make work, and I say this as someone who has put in the reps with it all edition so far and boy has this been hard), I just want to say upfront:

I like Buhrdur, and I want him to succeed.

So everything I say next should be taken in the spirit of constructive criticism and finding ways to make tasty lemonade, because I really do want to see this army list work! But as it is, it has a lot of limitations, few answers to common problems, and relies on a whole lot of luck to bring in the wins.

Buhrdur's Horde: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

The list of models in this army list hasn't changed from the previous edition: it's representative of the orcs and terrifying creatures common in the Third Age in the forests of Rhudaur and the mountains near Imladris, and is an Angmar army that has no undead in it (which is pretty unique, but also pretty cool). With a mix of orcs, wargs, and trolls, at the very least, you do have access to fast models, which not every army does.

The New Age Is Begun: The Battle of Fornost Army List

Good morning gamers,

Editor's Note: Before we begin the formal post, I just wanted to say that we just passed the 5 million view mark - we're so happy that you guys read our stuff and we'll keep doing what we can to provide accurate information and thoughtful articles about the game we all love!

One of the last games I played in the old edition (not including the practice leading up to our throw-back tournament we did last year) was with the Battle of Fornost. I had to proxy Earnur with Elessar, but golly was the list fun to use. In this edition of the game, the Battle of Fornost remains a powerhouse list, with a very unique flavoring of different factions that is probably only rivaled by the Battle of Five Armies, the Legions of Mordor, or the Defenders of the Pelennor. Of all the Rivendell-style armies, this one has the most warrior diversity by far and also has a really interesting array of heroes. Let's see what this list brings and why it seems to be a good list in the competitive scene.

The Battle of Fornost: Changes for 2025

Profile Selection

This list is composed of three elements: Gondor, Arnor, and Rivendell. The "Arnor" section is incredibly fragmented, but this also makes for some very interesting options for your list building. The Arnor heroes include Aranarth (Valor) and Rangers of the North (Minor or Independent) and all of these guys can lead Hobbit Archers (more on this later in the post).

The Gondor contingent is Earnur (required, Legend) and Captains of Minas Tirith and they can lead Knights of Minas Tirith and Warriors of Minas Tirith (pretty restrictive, but really all you need). The Rivendell contingent includes Glorfindel (required, Legend), Cirdan (Fortitude), and Rivendell Captains (Fortitude) and they can lead Rivendell Warriors. Thirteen total profiles doesn't seem huge (and is less than the total number of heroes available to any of those omnibus lists I mentioned earlier!), but it has an incredible array of models to choose from - heavily-armored men (foot and mounted), heavily-armored Elves (mostly on foot), unarmored Hobbits (on foot, obviously), and hero-warrior Rangers (all on foot).
