The Citadel of the Stars, Part VII: The Fall of Osgiliath

Good morning gamers,

This is our penultimate scenario in our custom Osgiliath campaign and we're playing the Fall of Osgiliath from Gondor At War. This scenario required only minor force adjustments to make it legal under the new edition and was an interesting scenario because it involves cutting through part of the enemy army to escape from the rest of the enemy. Let's see who our participants are . . ..

The Fall of Osgiliath (Gondor at War, p. 16)

We've decided to use the following models in today's game:

  • Forces of Good: Garrison of Ithilien
    • Faramir, Captain of Ithilien
    • Madril, Ranger of Ithilien
    • Damrod, Ranger of Ithilien
    • Anborn, Ranger of Ithilien
    • Mablung, Ranger of Ithilien
    • 4 8 Warriors of Minas Tirith with shields
    • 4 8 Warriors of Minas Tirith with shields and spears
    • 4 Warriors of Minas Tirith with bows
    • 12 Rangers of Gondor
    • 4 Rangers of Gondor with spear
  • Forces of Evil: The Army of Gothmog
    • Gothmog, Lieutenant of Morgul
    • Gothmog's Enforcer
    • Guritz, Master of Reserves
    • 6 9 Morannon Orcs
    • 6 9 Morannon Orcs with shields
    • 6 9 Morannon Orcs with spears
    • 6 9 Morannon Orcs with shields and spears

This is our first scenario with Gothmog, who I know a lot of people critique in his new state. The improvements to Morannons against Men and the reduction in cost for Gothmog (if you don't take the Warg) means the cost of this list in this edition compared to the previous edition is only about a 25pts difference - pretty negligible. Let's look at how our board looks . . .

The board is a 48"x48" setup:

My forces will need to escape off the west/left board edge (in the rest of the photos, it will be "down") and Centaur will be trying to stop me from getting a quarter of my guys off. If Faramir dies, the best I can get is a draw. We'll see how this goes!

Turn 1: Priority Good

Both Madril (1/3) and Gothmog (1/3) declared Heroic Marches and I moved as far forward with my melee troops as I could. Faramir is on my extreme left flank (right side of the photo) but wasn't charged. My Rangers are covering my retreat, all of them able to fire.

In the Shoot Phase, Madril wounded Gothmog with his bow (2/3M), Gothmog failed his Fate roll (1/1F, 1/3H), and Anborn kills an Orc (free + 1/1M). I will say that with the amount of archery I put out . . . I was kind of hoping for more. That's SBG archery for you . . .

In the Fight Phase, Guritz declared a Heroic Combat (1/2M), failed to win his Duel roll, and took no wounds. In the other fights, two Morannons died and one Minas Tirith Warrior died.

Turn 2: Priority Good

Charges everywhere! Faramir and as many guys as I could wrapped around the Morannons and my Rangers fell back more (some were charged). I'm mostly in a holding pattern and hoping to crush one third of the army with my melee units in order to make a bug enough hole to get Faramir and as much of my army as possible off.

In the Shoot Phase, Anborn killed another Orc (free Might) - clutch, man! Once again, however, I kinda wanted more from the archery.

Faramir declared a Heroic Combat (1/3M) in the Fight Phase, won the Duel, killed his foe, and charged into a spearman. I'm playing extra cautious with him, but know that he needs to be hacking through people if we're going to crack through the Morannons.

In the rest of the fights, Gothmog needed to boost his Dueling roll to win his fight (2/3M) and wound Damrod (1/2H), his buddy next door killed a Ranger, Faramir LOST his fight but wasn't wounded, and I lost more men than I killed . . . not great, if I'm honest.

Turn 3: Priority Good

Gothmog's Enforcer declared a Heroic Move (1/1M - he too far to use Gothmog's rule) and a bunch of my Rangers got charged. I continued to move guys towards my target board edge, but it's still a slog at the bottom of the photo.

In the Shoot Phase, a Ranger kills another Orc - four wounds in three rounds of shooting? I'll take it, though - I didn't have a lot of shots this turn.

Heroic Combats were declared by Guritz (2/2M), Faramir (2/3M), and Gothmog (3/3M) in the Fight Phase. Guritz lost to a guy shielding (not his day), Faramir won and moved on to another fight, and Gothmog lost to Madril (3/3M). Damrod died, but I managed to clear out a TON of Orcs, so we finally have a path out of here!

Turn 4: Priority tied, Evil

Mablung (1/1M, far right of the photo) and Faramir (3/3M my left flank) declared Heroic Moves - and we started to run! Faramir himself charged one guy, but everyone else catapulted downwards or removed control zones.

The Time of the Orc Has Come! Honestly . . . this one hurt a lot, but I don't think most of the rerolls were necessary. I did lose 5 guys, though, so it was still a huge turn for the Orcs!

Turn 5: Priority Evil

Good has a lot of guys almost off the board - and not a lot else up above. Oh, and Faramir is out of Might and nowhere near the escape point . . .

In the Fight Phase, Mablung lost his fight and was wounded, but passed his Fate (1/1F) . . . and has been the case all campaign, Faramir got surrounded and died! Playing for a draw . . . again . . .

Turn 6: Priority Evil

No picture of the main fight, guys, but on this turn, the required 13 models escaped, so this is it!

Madril lost his fight and was wounded twice, but passed his Fate (1/1F). Besides Mablung, Madril, and a single Ranger (who beat Gothmog!), everyone else died . . . oof.

Conclusion

All in all, I think this is a really fun scenario and can be useful for anyone who wants to both practice how to slow an opponent from getting to an objective and how to break shieldwalls quickly (I didn't do it fast enough, but I eventually did). Next time, we're closing things out with the final scenario from the Battle of Osgiliath starter box - until then, happy hobbying!
